Fire door requirements UK: what the check covers, what the duty is, and what the record proves, for a building in England

Updated

Fire door requirements UK is answered here for a building in England, because fire safety law is devolved and the rules differ across the border. The requirements are of three kinds, all cited below. What the door has to be and do: the fact sheet's check items. What the responsible person has to do: the Fire Safety Order's assessment and maintenance, and Regulation 10's checks in residential buildings over 11 metres. What has to be recorded: all of it. The fire door inspection checklist on this site is the first kind, free and without an account.

Of the door

The fact sheet lists what a check covers: whether there has been any alteration or damage to the door's glazing apertures or air transfer grille, whether there are gaps around the door frame and whether the seals and hinges are fitted correctly, that the door closer shuts the door, that the door closes correctly around the whole frame, and that there is no visible damage to the door or the closer. Each is a line on the checklist, read against the doorset's own tolerances from its certification record.

Of the responsible person

A fire risk assessment under article 9 and maintenance in efficient working order under article 17 of the Order. Under Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, as the Home Office fact sheet cited below states it, the responsible person for a multi-occupied residential building in England with storeys over 11 metres must undertake quarterly checks of all fire doors, including self-closing devices, in the common parts, and, on a best endeavour basis, annual checks of all flat entrance doors that lead onto the common parts. Information to residents on keeping doors closed, not tampering, and reporting faults.

Of the record

The certification and installation evidence per door, the checks on the frequency with each item's result, the defects and the repairs, and the resident information given. A requirement met and not recorded cannot be shown to have been met. The records on this site are the certification, installation and repairs records; DoorsetBook Pro keeps them with the checks.

Outside England

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own fire safety law and building standards, and Regulation 10 does not apply. The register on this site records the nation per building so the requirements applied are the right ones.
